Kaangawas: Craft Research Documentation (Punja Durries)

Kaangawas is a craft research document on the Punja Durrie craft of Salawas, Jodhpur. Our team was on a journey to Jodhpur for a duration of one week, where we interacted with the artisans, and learnt the strenuous process of producing Punja Durries.
The name Kaangawas was chosen as a title is because it is derived from two words- 'Kaanga' and 'Salawas'. The word 'kaanga' is a Marwari word which is substituted for the word 'punja'. While, 'Salawas' refers to the village we visited.
The illustrations are inspired by the classic geometric, step - like patterns of the Punja Durrie.
We have also produced a film for our craft study. The film focuses on the 'Bhunkars' (weavers) and their families who are behind the production of the Punja Durries rather than focusing on the process of the craft. Our aim was to try and create a connect between the audience with the artisan...
We hope you enjoyed our work!
